Department of Animal Science and
Nutrition
The Department of Animal Science and
Nutrition within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Balıkesir University
comprises four major disciplines: Biostatistics, Genetics, Animal Nutrition and
Nutritional Diseases, and Animal Science. The department offers undergraduate
and graduate-level education and training programs.
In addition to theoretical courses,
practical training is provided in areas such as feed and nutrient analysis,
animal feeding, feed additives and ration formulation, genetics, and animal
science. Alongside educational activities, scientific research is conducted in
the fields of animal nutrition and nutritional diseases, genetics, animal
science, and biostatistics.
The department hosts feed analysis
laboratories as well as genetics and animal science laboratories. Scientific
studies are carried out in the research units for broilers, quails, laying
hens, and sheep located at the University’s Livestock Practice and Research
Center.
The department's research and education
activities cover the management and nutrition of farm animals, feeds and feed
additives, feed technologies, microbiome-based nutrition, fermented feeds, in
vitro digestion trials, metabolic diseases due to nutrient deficiencies and
their prevention, genetics, nutrigenomics, gene polymorphism, animal breeding,
the effects of morphological and physiological characteristics on animal
production, and processing, analysis, and research and trial planning of data
obtained in studies on biostatistics. Additionally, efforts to improve animal
productivity and product quality, as well as education and research in
biostatistics, are ongoing.
The department engages in fundamental and innovative scientific research and undertakes projects aimed at solving problems related to animal husbandry, breeding, nutrition, and production at national and regional levels. It also organizes farmer training programs. Comprehensive analyses at the DNA level are performed in our molecular genetics research laboratory.The feed analysis laboratory provides services to the industry, and the department offers consultancy to the regional livestock sector while conducting collaborative scientific research in animal husbandry and nutrition.
The department staff includes 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, and 1 Assistant Professor.
